a couple of bits of advice for you as you pack your bags:
it's a good idea to bring some cash (costa rican colones and/or US dollars) to playa grande with you, as there is not an ATM in the neighborhood. we ordered $200 in colones from bank of america last week and got them 3 days later, so you can follow suit if you want some bills in your pocket before leaving home. alternatively, or in addition, you can get colones when you arrive in liberia - there is a currency exchange as well as an ATM at the airport. if you need to get more cash after you've arrived in playa grande, there are ATMs in tamarindo, which is a short water taxi ride away.
we'd encourage you to err on the side of having more cash than less. and be aware that some of the house rentals require payment in cash, so any house renters should check payment policies and make sure that you are bringing enough cash to cover your costs.
american dollars are also accepted at some of the local spots, and you should be able to use credit cards for pricier purchases, like hotel stays or fancy meals.
